In addition to our own stories, we like to occasionally run contests to encourage other Shadowrun writers to put their creativity to work for a chance to win prizes. We run an annual Short Story Contest plus others throughout the year. This page showcases the winners of those contests, as well as the other entries. Don't forget to check out the Rat's Fiction Page for more stories!

Note: Except for the winners, all other stories are listed in random order.

This year there were two contests instead of one! The first contest challenged entrants to write a story in which the protagonist experiences and deals with some sort of moral dilemma. The second contest invited folks to write a Winterhawk story. Prizes for these two contests included original Fred Hooper artwork, books autographed by FASA folks and Mike Stackpole, and limited edition Gen Con corp badges.

The challenge of the 1999 Magespace Short Story Contest was to write a story from the point of view of a non-shadowrunner--one of the millions of nameless, faceless folks who rarely if ever come into contact with cyberware, magic, fantastic creatures, or other things that are a shadowrunner's daily routine. The first and second prizes for this story were original signed art pieces by Fred Hooper and Steve Bryant.

Whoever thought you could win a contest by writing a bad story--and whoever thought it would be so hard to do? This contest's objective was to use as many cliches, hackneyed techiques, and overused concepts to write a humorous but awful Shadowrun story. This contest was sponsored by Dragonscroll and the prize was a new copy of any Shadowrun book they offered.

The premise of this contest was easy: write a complete Shadowrun story in 61 words or fewer. It was inspired by a contest that appears annually in one of my college town (San Luis Obispo, CA) newspapers.
